Today, we arrived to school to find a letter from The Giant asking for our help to make some magic potions. The children have been learning about capacity and measuring liquid in milliliters, so year 1 were able to measure the ingredients carefully using their maths skills. Here are some photographs from our exciting morning.
Year 1 have explored 3D shapes this week. The children have been on a 3D shape hunt. They have built castles using a range of 3D shapes, naming each shape and its properties. They have sorted the shapes according to their own criteria.
Year 1 received a message from the giant telling us that we had lots of measuring to do! The children measured the giant’s footprints using non-standard units of measure to begin with. The children chose to measure using cubes, counters, pencils and glue sticks etc. We then worked using standard units of measure. We used […]
Year 1 have been enjoying learning in their new role play area this week. We have linked our role play area to our topic of Traditional Tales. Here are some photographs of the children in their new area.
We read and discussed the book ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ The children created freeze frames in pairs. Each pair’s action would either be a ‘bucket filler’ action or a ‘bucket dipper’ action. We decided as a class whether these actions would fill our invisible happiness buckets or take away from them. We made […]
In Science, we have continued to learn about the weather and the seasons. This week, we learnt about the wind. We have each made a wind sock to determine the wind direction. We each created our own version of a Beaufort Scale. This is a scale which shows what we would observe outside in different […]
Year 1 visited the Saddleworth Museum. We learnt about people and events from history that are significant to our local area. Firstly, we learnt all about the Rushcart festival, what it is and why and how it is celebrated both in the past and today. We made our own Skedlock flower sticks and flower hats […]
Year 1 have been interested in snowflakes. We read the story ‘Snowflakes’ and used the internet to search for photographs of snowflakes. We tried drawing lots of different types, remembering that they have 6 ‘arms’ and are symmetrical. Then, we used a white wax crayon to draw our final design and used watercolour paints over […]
Last week, year 1 embraced the snow! We went outside and experienced the snow and thought about how we could describe the snow using all of our senses. The children came up with fantastic adjectives which they used in their sentence work. We have been reading the story ‘Snowflakes’. We wrote a letter to the […]
This week, year 1 have become weather reporters. The children have enjoyed creating a forecast and sharing their report with the class. We looked at Mondrian’s art work and recreated our own version of his famous paintings using colours that represent winter time. In Maths, we have been practicing counting in steps of 2s, 5s […]
Year 1 have started learning about the four seasons. We have observed signs outside that it is winter, read books about the seasons and written what we have learnt into sentences. We have made a calendar for the new year based on our learning. The children have enjoyed learning in their new role play area – […]
Year 1 have an exciting new role play area; Santa’s Workshop! Children can use the area to practice writing their Christmas shopping lists and letters to Father Christmas. They can practice their cutting skills by choosing wrapping paper and bows to cut, stick and wrap up a parcel and choose their gift tag to write. […]
