    Diversity week

    This week, we have made a class diversi-Tree. Everyone considered what made them unique, by sharing our ideas it demonstrates our class communi-tree working together. We also compared the main rules from the world’s 6 main religions. This follows on from a recent focus upon the Bible’s 10 commandments.

    King and King

    On Tuesday, in class we read the story King and King (By Linda Haan and Stern Nijland). The books were used as a gateway to reflect on how our language can make others feel.

    The Big Question

    As part of science this week, we investigated; what animals eat, which are the healthiest foods, how many kinds of animals exist and which drinks are most damaging to teeth. We made food chains, food webs, classified animals and carried out an investigation. Here are some images from the week’s activities.

    Equivalent fractions

    We have been working hard to discover relationships between fractions this week in maths. In the image below, we are all involved in finding one fifth of our class. Each time we did this with a different total, using 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and finally all 30 children.

    Life cycle of a plant

    Also on Thursday, we learned about scientific words such as germination, fertilisation and pollination while learning about how plants reporoduce. We then charted the seven parts of the process in our books.

    Super writing

    In class on Thursday we created expanded noun sentences, based on a crashed plane in the Amazon jungle. Here is an example of the sentences made.

    Maths – finding fractions of amounts

    Children continue to use concrete counting equipment to divide amounts according to the denominator shown by fractions. Then, they count the number of groups made (according to the numerator) to find the final amount needed. Drawing amounts follows on from using these practical pieces of equipment.

    Emociones

    In Spanish Year 3 have played Conectar Cuatro, using feelings in Spanish as they placed the counters. We are increasing our conversational language week by week. May bien ninos!

    Class Maths

    This poster is a great example of how we investigate fractions of amounts. Try some more examples at home. Can you find fractions of house hold items? For example, how many eggs  would 2/6ths be from a pack of 24.

    Class reading

    We began to read a new story last week in class too. The Explorer, written by one of Mr Casey’s favourite authors Kathrine Rundell. We will not read the whole story so if children wish to find and read the full version then please encourage them to do so.

    Last week children used their craft skills whilst making helmets to celebrate April 23rd – St George, the patron saint of England and other countries too.

    Climate comparisons

    In topic, we compared temperature and rainfall found in 3 different locations by drawing bar and line graphs. We did this by overlaying the two measures on the same x axis. Great work produced amazing results and a interesting discussion of the findings.

    Your child’s attempt at the Year Three and Four word list was given to be taken home. Please practise these words and encourage them to use them in homework. 40 Correct spellings is the target for this year.

    Documentary voice overs

    Children have been working using a video clip from BBC’s Planet Earth this week. Adding fronted adverbial phrases into sentences that could be used in a, documentary style, commentary. We also discussed the subordination that also often features using this literacy tool.

    Bottle caps

    Year 3’s collection of bottle lids is growing but we need more. Can you help? Please keep, and send in an old plastic lids for a school wide project later in the year. All classes are taking part so tell your friends too and join in the collecting!

    Coming soon to a theatre near you…

    Year 3 and 4 have been working hard to rehearse songs and dances in preparation for the upcoming show “Mystery of Magpie Manor”. The show is coming together nicely. If you have any costume enquiries then please be in touch.

    This week in art we looked at how Ancient Greek vases were used as a way to record historic events. We focussed on perspective and making our vases appearing round using Greek patterns.

    This week, in preparation for performing our own play scripts in class, we have created masks based on  Ancient Greek theatre.

    Ancient Greek Life

    We discussed the Attalus and how it was used as place for market stalls and a space for public discussion. We then made our own Greek sandals, as they would often have used the space for walking as they discussed ideas. It was rather tricky to thread the sandals accurately!
